Why Evil?

by Brandy Webb

Every day there are stories in the news that make our hearts slump. Stories that make us realize that we live in an evil world. I have found myself wondering why things have to be the way they are. I have been asked by my friends that do not have complete faith, that if God is so loving, why does He allow all this evil to happen?

It is a valid question, and I have struggled to answer it, mainly, because they do not want me to use the Bible as my reasoning. The thing is, I cannot answer that question without my faith and the Bible. We live in an evil world because sin entered into it in the beginning at the Garden of Eden.

Satan is the god of this world, and we have to accept that fact (2 Cor 4:4). Until the Messiah returns, evil will occur. Humans are sinful by nature, that is why the Messiah was sent to the world in the first place, to free us, cleanse us, and to give us a chance at eternal life (John 3:16-19).

So, what does one do to keep from getting depressed when there are so many bad things happening? We hold tight to our faith (Heb 10:22-23). We put on the full armor of God (Eph 6:11). We love, serve, pray, forgive, and remember that we have a Savior that knows what we are going through (Heb 4:15-16).

This world is temporary. It may seem like a long wait for us, but the way of this world is not eternal. One day, God “will wipe away every tear. There won’t be death anymore. There won’t be any grief, crying, or pain, because the first things” will disappear (Rev 21:4). May we live a life that exemplifies our hope in this scripture, so that the light within us can comfort others.
